All the Spunk in Deep Red

To start off the process in turning this wordpress into a dominating anime blog, I’ll be talking about a favorite character of mine. This favorite character is known among the anime world especially with the hype and magic the series created during the Winter 2011 season. Yes, I am talking about the anime known as Puella Magi Madoka Magica (a.k.a Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica).

Based from the title, it’s a giveaway who my favorite character in the series is— Sakura Kyouko. Yes, the girl who was characterized to be antagonistic yet helpful. I like how she was depicted throughout the series and the characterization she went through. For a supporting character, the story of her life was shared completely. What made her who she is was depicted splendidly. While it is better to see her in action in the actually series, here is a 5-minute video that attempts to summarize what her role was in the series. The video is like a music video while telling a story, so it’ll be entertaining.

In the anime, she is the rival of Sayaka in attaining jurisdiction of the city Mami lost. The rivalry was greatly emphasized in the series, but it reached a point that their rivalry also mirrored the friendship they formed. Kyouko saw a part of herself in Sayaka when they first met. She knew Sayaka would be in trouble and that’s why she tried to change Sayaka’s mindset about being a magical girl.

To become a magical girl, one needs to have a wish granted and Kyubey will form a contract with them. Sayaka made one to save a boy she loved, but to Kyouko, that was Sayaka’s greatest downfall. Even if Sayaka saved the boy, she wouldn’t have time to spend with the boy because of her duties as a magical girl. To make it worse, when the opposite party finds out, things can get pretty nasty— which happened to Kyouko. That is why Kyouko has this parental aura when it comes to Sayaka and cared for Sayaka’s well-being until Sayaka’s demise.

Kyouko is one of those characters I can say I love as a whole. There isn’t anything wrong with her in my honest opinion because even with her faults, she’s an amazing character to see in action. Her magical girl outfit is one of my favorites because its design is elegant and the deep red color is eye-catching. Her weapon of choice isn’t the easiest to manipulate, which shows how long she has been in the magical girl business. Her weapon is a spear that can break down into segments that are connected by chains. Along with her weapon, she shows wonderful skills in battle and knows how to defend others— a skill that must be learned over time with her weapon.

Not only are her battle skills entertaining to watch, but how she goes about her daily life. She has a fascination towards apples and pocky, so those are the most common foods you see her eating in the series. She also has a love for rhythm games, which is greatly emphasized in the series. For whenever a character needs to find her, they surely know she’s at the arcade playing a rhythm game.

You could say she’s one of those characters I wouldn’t mind becoming. Her lifestyle isn’t that great, but she stands firm of her beliefs and standards. She’s not afraid of speaking her mind and fighting for what she wants. She’s filled with energy and spunk— that’s probably why I’m attracted to her. In the end, I loved watching her from the beginning of her appearance in the series to her end.
